minnesota land & liberty coalition production tax information
Counties in Minnesota receive energy production tax from renewable energy projects producing electricity throughout the calendar year. Minnesota taxes $1.20 per megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity generated and that amount stays within the county.
80% is provided to the county government and 20% is given to the city/township where the project(s) are located. This revenue, which is paid by the operator of renewable energy projects, not the taxpayers, can be used to invest in public infrastructure, and emergency services, save in a rainy day fund, or even offer property tax relief! The best part is that production tax revenue is achieved without raising the county levy and easing the burden on hardworking taxpayers.
